Someone Trained an AI to Create Pokemon. They Look Like Eldritch Horrors
We all enjoy a little Pokemon, don’t we? I was a Pokemon-obsessed child, and the 493 monsters were just too much. So I started to love browsing the internet for fakemon. I tried to make my own, but I won’t share them here. It turns out that we don’t need people to do this anymore. The robot uprising is here, leaving frightening Fakemon behind.
Buzzfeed Data Scientist Max Woolf (u/minimaxir) has unleashed chaos on the r/pokemon Reddit. He shared 192 hilarious abominations that range from being slightly off-base to pure nightmare fuel.
He explained that the AI used in this thread is a fine-tuned Rudall-E from the official Pokemon images. The AI generates images in 8×8 blocks from the top to the right. The AI samples each chunk randomly to ensure consistency. This fine-tuning process teaches the AI how to recognize chunks of Pokemon.
It’s not surprising that some of these pictures are so disturbing, especially when you consider the phrase “chunks a Pokemon.” I don’t even know the look of this one, but those crimson eyes stare into my soul, and it isn’t something I like.
Reddit user the dandy-man commented, “This is how I envision Eldritch beings looking like.” It seems like everything is normal at first, but if one looks closely, you can see that many things are missing and bodies that don’t fit together. This makes it difficult to believe it could be an actual human product. But technology is impressive!” The technology is amazing!”
It wouldn’t be challenging to make a new Pokedex game from these 200 monstrosities. It would probably be closer to a Pokemon horror game, which sounds incredible now that I think about it. Game Freak, take note!
