Shovel Knight is a 2D side-scrolling platformer that uses an 8-bit graphic style. Players control the protagonist, as he collects treasures and fights the Order of No Quarter.

The player can find Chester, a salesman hidden on many levels. He can then purchase secondary items called relics which can be used with limited amounts of magic.
These include long-range projectiles and gloves that can break through dirt blocks. A locket grants invincibility for a short time.
