MASS EFFECT 4 REPORTEDLY DEVELOPED Using UNREAL ENGINE 5.
Mass Effect 4 will use the Unreal Engine to develop, as a job listing confirms. This marks a shift from Electronic Arts’ Frostbite Engine.
Brenon Holmes, a producer of BioWare, confirmed that they are looking for programmers who have experience in Unreal Engine 4 or 5, indicating that Epic’s latest tools will be used to develop the next Mass Effect game.
According to Jeff Grubb of GamesBeat, GameRant’s job listing is a “full-cycle AAA game development” experience using the Unreal Engine.
In a follow-up tweet, Grubb stated that Mass Effect 4 was being developed using Unreal Engine 5. This sounds plausible, even though there isn’t any official confirmation about the engine’s version from BioWare and Electronic Arts.
The developer had confirmed that a new Mass Effect game was being developed in late 2020. However, the project was still in its infancy.
It is, therefore, likely that it will not be released until the next few years. The Unreal Engine 5’s technological advancements could make the RPG more competitive with other titles that release in the same timeframe. This is despite the increasing list of games missing Unreal Engine 4.
The Frostbite Engine, used in the disastrous Mass Effect: Andromeda, was a great tool for creating beautiful worlds. However, there were reports that it was difficult to adapt it to the requirements of the series and genre.
Electronic Arts’ engine was originally designed with first-person shooters such as Battlefield in mind. The shift away from Battlefield likely came about because of Andromeda’s disappointing launch.
Mass Effect’s return to Unreal Engine sounds good news. The original trilogy was created using the engine’s third edition. But, likely, we will not see this as the return fans are hoping for.
