About Heroes of Might and Magic IV
Gus Smedstad developed Heroes of Might and Magic IV, a turn-based strategy board game. Heroes were able to join their troops on the battlefield, unlike previous games where they played a passive role in combat.
You can have more than one hero or no heroes, but armies without a hero cannot perform certain tasks such as taking over enemy structures or towns. Fixed-view, isometric 3D displays were used to display both combat and adventure maps. It was possible to display units of different sizes in the traditional hexagon-based battle grid. This made it much easier to convert to a square-based grid with a higher resolution. Non-hero spellcasting unit were allowed to choose the right spells. Retaliation was permitted simultaneously with the attack.
Ranged units were also given the ability to retaliate against such attacks. Spells and projectile attacks now require direct line-of-sight to the target. Each troop unit received its own movement allowance, with the ability to separate from the main army. However, troops cannot be “shuttled” from one hero to another to move large army distances in one turn. Travel spells were eliminated or reduced to make logistics more difficult.
This was partly compensated by the removal of the requirement to visit resource-producing structures every week and the introduction caravans that can safely and quickly transport heroes and recruit troops remotely from outside dwellings.
