Two players can help each other and can speak or text, but cannot communicate with each other until the credits. A musical chime is the only way to communicate between them. It transforms the level’s levels from the dull cloth into a vibrant red and allows the player to move on through the levels.
The developers wanted to instill in the player a sense of smallness and wonder and forge an emotional bond between them and the anonymous characters they meet along their journey. Austin Wintory composed the music and it reacts to player actions. This creates a single theme that represents the emotional arc of the story.
