The Chinese passenger car market saw a 22.7% increase in sales to 1.944 million units in June. Sales also increased 43.5% compared to May’s 1.354million units.
The number of new energy light vehicles sold increased 130.5% by year to 531,000 units. Sales were 360,000 units in May, which is a 47.8% rise in sales.
BYD was first in new-energy vehicle sales, with 132,553 units, an increase of 228.8% over the previous year. Tesla occupies the second spot with 77.9k cars sold, 177% more than June 2013.
It was reported earlier that BYD sold 641 thousand electric cars in the first half 2024, having ceased production of internal combustion engines. It was able to surpass Tesla and become the global leader in electric vehicle sales in six months.
With more than 40,000 vehicles, SAIC-GMWuling was third. Geely Automobile (GAC Aian), Chery Automobile, Changan Automobile, and Chery Automobile were also in the top ten, taking 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.
Emerging automakers like Xiaopeng Automobiles, Nezha Automobiles, Lili Automobiles, Weilai Automobiles and Leapmotor did well. Great Wall Motors finished 12th.
FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC Volkswagen are also included in the list. These companies are joint car manufacturers and have just recently entered the market for new-energy vehicles. This deserves to be noted.
